Township Zoning Commission

Zoning Commission Meeting Schedule

The Zoning Commission generally meets as needed at the Township Service Complex, 1554 Columbus Rd, Granville.  The Zoning Commission has determined their 2017 meeting schedule will be the 1st and 3rd Monday’s of each month.  Meetings will be listed on the Township’s website and notices will be placed in a paper of general circulation. If it is not possible because of newspaper deadlines to place a notice in the paper a notice will be placed on the north door of the Service Complex 24 hours in advance of the meeting.

Township Zoning Commission

The Township Zoning Commission has the following duties:

  1. Initiate proposed amendments to the Township Zoning Resolution.
  2. Consider and review all proposed amendments to the Township Zoning Resolution and make recommendations to the Board of Township Trustees.
  3. Review all Planned Unit Developments and make recommendations to the Board of Township Trustees.

The Township Zoning Commission meets on an ad hoc basis, the time and place of which are published in either the Granville Sentinel or the Newark Advocate.

The Board of Zoning Appeals

The powers of the Board of Zoning Appeals are very similar to those of the courts. Under the Ohio Revised Code, the Board of Zoning Appeals is given three basic powers:

  1. To hear and decide appeals
  2. To grant variances.
  3. To grant conditional use permits.

Appeals and variances go to the Board of Zoning Appeals only after an applicant is refused a zoning permit by the zoning inspector or deputy zoning inspector. The Board of Zoning Appeals receives applications for conditional use permits for its consideration.

The only recourse to a decision by the Board of Zoning Appeals is to the courts and not the legislative authority [the Township Trustees] as set forth in the Ohio Revised Code.
